Jason Kinney is a respected Sacramento-based public affairs consultant and political communications expert who has advised California’s best known public officials, most prominent job creators, and most impactful political associations. He most recently worked on the official Transition of Governor-elect Gavin Newsom, who Kinney has advised for nearly 14 years.
Before that, Kinney served as a Partner at California Strategies LLC, where he worked as a public affairs and communications strategist, with a specialty in health care issues. His clients included California Medical Association, Dignity Health, National Football League, AT&T, CTIA, No on Proposition 46 and Yes on Proposition 64. His work on their behalf included public outreach and education campaigns, strategic consulting, media relations and event management.
He also serves as a senior strategist for the California Senate Democrats.
Before joining California Strategies, Kinney was Director of the Sacramento office of global public relations company Burson Marsteller.
Kinney also previously served as Senior Communications Advisor and Chief Speechwriter to Governor Gray Davis. Before entering the Davis Administration, Kinney served as Communications Director to California State Senator Don Perata.
A native of Indiana, Kinney launched a career in political campaign management at the age of 13, when he helped run his mother’s campaign for State Senate. Kinney is an attorney licensed to practice law in the state of Indiana, with degrees from Princeton University and Indiana University School of Law.
He lives in Sacramento with his wife, Mary Gonsalves Kinney, daughters Stella and Violet, and son Dashiell.
